Project Sokol – modernisation of B84 passenger coaches
The project delivered new interiors for first- and second-class open passenger coaches and a bar coach as part of the overhaul of B84 coaches from the 1974 and 2974 series.
The work was carried out with Interkom AD railway vehicle works in Dryanovo, Bulgaria. MDC provided key engineering and manufacturing capabilities in Ukraine, while IBT GmbH coordinated logistics and project delivery from Germany.
Scope of work
- Development of a coach layout that balanced passenger capacity, the existing vehicle structure and mandatory safety requirements.
- Creation and iterative evaluation of calculation models for seat spacing, aisle widths, emergency exits, luggage racks and airflow.
- Digital change management and coordinated collaboration between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian project teams.
- Design and verification of bespoke luggage racks and passenger tables, including structural calculations.
- Redesign of the air-distribution system while retaining the approved underfloor equipment arrangement and integrating the ducts into the ceiling and side walls.
- Delivery of pre-assembled modules, including toilet units, ceiling elements and luggage racks, to reduce installation time.
The modular approach and close coordination between all parties enabled the project to be completed within the planned schedule and budget.
